  6. Happy New Year, Jonathan and all who participate here. I have just received approval for an EF vespers service for Feast of the Purification on Feb. 2. Probably for the first time since before Vatican II, if it was ever done at all. Also my first time to organize a public vespers service. I’ve been chanting the EF monastic office (Lauds & Vespers) privately for some time. So….I have a lot to learn and not a whole lot of time. That brings me to two questions: 1) is that service posted here yet? 2) can I get help from you to double-check what I come up with for this service?
    I think there is a site where I can get the pointed psalm chants so I don’t have create that for my choir. Also, I will be glad to provide a recording for this date if needed, and provided I’ve got it right.

  8. The current project, for starters, is of course to do Lauds; but I intentionally wrote some of the descriptions of the purpose of the blog so as to include the possibility that people might want to post other hours as well.

    So, no, Vespers of Feb. 2nd are not posted here, but it will be great to have you post them!

    Looking up things quickly, I would consult the Liber Usualis:

    Vespers for Feb. 2nd is laid out on p. 1366; the psalms you will need are all referenced, and you will find that the Liber does point them for you (which is why the LU is my go to for this).
    The verse Deus in adjutorium would be in the festal tone, p. 250.
    The tone for the little chapter is on p. 123.
    The hymn is Ave maris stella, p. 1259 (either of the two other tones would be fine also).
    The tone for the verse is p. 118 (the one with the neume at the end).
    The Magnificat I would do with the regular tone, not the solemn tone, as it is not a 1st class feast; however, take the incipit on all verses because of its being a gospel canticle.
    [This is my take on the solemn tone for the Magnificat; formerly, it looks to have been used on Doubles of the first and second classes; however, I have not seen a changed rubric which explains its use with respect to feasts I or II class. What I am going off of is the fact that other things which were used on Doubles of the first and second class are now specified as being for feasts I class, so this is my current theory for the solemn tones for the Magnificat and Benedictus, i.e. that they should only be used on feasts I class.]
    The tone for the collect would be p. 100 if you want the ancient solemn tone; otherwise p. 98, which would be the festive tone. Either one you precede and follow with the verse Domine exaudi (or Dominus vobiscum) in the same tone.
    The Benedicamus Domino is on p. 126; it is the mode 8 tone, for 2nd Vespers of feasts II class.
    The verse Fidelium animae in the Liber would be p. 261.

    Also, if you are singing live with a choir, you will have to figure out roles, sides of the choir, and so on. I got it all straight for Vespers once, by interviewing an FSSP seminarian, but I have since forgotten; if I’m able to remember it or otherwise track this down again, I’ll see if I can post it.

    So that’s what I’ve come up with at present; correct me if I’m wrong!

    I had been semi-avoiding Friday, because I haven’t done the Friday psalms since before Christmas, due to Epiphany’s falling on Friday.

  33. Interesting to think about, the psalms:

    It looks like before Septuagesima, the psalms are always scheme 1, even on ferias.
    Then after Septuagesima, the psalms are scheme 2 on ferias, but feasts III class will still be celebrated (though, there aren’t too many of them), which means that on these the scheme 1 psalms will still be sung now and then.
    Then after Ash Wednesday, the ferias take precedence over the feasts III class, so scheme 1 will finally be gone until Easter.
